I met my housemate during the two weeks in late August/early September when I was not sleeping and writing my HBB. I spent every second of spare time I had at a 24 hour coffee shop and would frequently get into conversations with random people when I took breaks. She had just come out of a controlling relationship and found herself homeless at age 60 and the best advice the shelter had to offer (while she waited for a spot) was to stay up all night in 24 hour coffee shops to stay warm and sleep while riding the MAX (our lightrail system)... problem with that is that you can't look for work when you have to sleep during daylight hours. We chatted over the course of about 9 days and I brought her home with me a couple of those days just to give her a place to shower and sleep in a bed so she wouldn't keel over from exhaustion.
Then I talked to my husband (I have a history of taking in homeless people for the winter) and he agreed that as she isn't strung out/dangerous and we both got to know her, that it was the least we could do to house her until she is able to get in at the shelter. So that's how it went. I knew I liked her from the first time I met her and she overheard my conversation with a random stranger about how "fuck" is the best word in the english language. :P
